Pruritus is a symptom of intense itching which is caused by some underlying diseases or disorders which generate a desperate urge to scratch. The severe and intractable itching can lead to skin inflammation and can be very debilitating and incapacitating. Systemic diseases, skin infections, pregnancy, dry skin and other skin disorders can cause pruritus. People suffering from asthma, hay fever, allergies, eczema, diabetes or AIDS are more likely to suffer from pruritus.
Certain drugs and medications or exposure to harmful chemicals in substances like soaps, shampoos, detergents and other cleansing agents can also cause allergic reactions and give rise to severe itching. Sometimes a rash also follows the itching and the skin becomes red and inflamed and takes on a coarse look. Pruritus can occur in any one particular area of the body or it can be generalized. Sometimes it resolves on its own after a few days but if it persists for more than six weeks then it becomes chronic.
