Excessive sneezing and a runny nose are generally caused either by the common cold or an allergy. The common cold is caused by viral infections of the upper respiratory tract. It mainly affects the nose and causes such symptoms as sneezing, coughing, runny nose, sore throat and fever.
Allergies too cause similar symptoms. Every change of season can bring its own trigger of gruesome symptoms. Dust, pollen, mould spores from rotting leaves, air pollutants and pet dander are the main causes of allergies. Allergic sneezes are different from the sneezes caused by colds.
They come as a bout of sneezes in succession and sneezes caused by the common cold are spaced apart. Allergies produce a clear and thin mucous while colds and infections cause a yellowish and green thick mucous. The symptoms caused by colds and flu persist all the time while allergic symptoms like sneezing and runny nose occur at certain times of the day or when you come in contact with allergens.
