Thrush is a fungal infection caused in the mouth due to the multiplication of Candida Albicans. Thrush is very common among mothers and this can easily be transmitted to the babies as well through contact. Therefore, it is important that the condition is treated as early as it appeared.
One needs to visit a doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Most often, home remedies are wonderfully effective and protect your body and breastfeeding mothers as well as babies from side effects. If you find a thick white patch on your cheek, pharynx, and tongue, you most probably have thrush. Here are some home remedies that can be used for treatment.
Probiotics do not directly work on the thrush but helps by increasing the amount of beneficial bacteria in the body and aiding the immune system to fight off the fungus without any external aid. The best form of probiotics that can be used at home is yoghurt.
Rich in acidophilus bacteria, it will help in overpowering the fungal patch and soon the fungus starts receding from the mouth. Take at least two cups of yoghurt every day until the infection fades away. Make sure that you allow the yoghurt to touch the areas of fungal growth in the mouth for at least fifteen minutes by allowing the yoghurt to remain in the mouth before swallowing.
Salt is a natural antibacterial agent and helps in treating mild cases of thrush, at the beginning of the infection. Take two teaspoons of salt and add to warm water. Gargle you mouth several times a day and leave the salted water in your mouth a few minutes several times as well. This is the best way to slowly discourage the fungal growth and aid in treating the condition naturally.
Onions have many anti fungal properties and it also contains globules of sulphur, which is known to be a healing agent. Chewing slices of onions for three minutes every day is associated with complete destruction of bacteria in the mouth. This is also a great way to recede the growth of candida albicans, which causes thrush.
Take slices of onions and chew in your mouth, allowing the onion juice to remain in the mouth for as much time as you possibly can. This can be repeated all throughout the day and for several weeks until all the fungi causing thrush are effectively dealt with.
Garlic is a pungent bulb that has many medicinal properties. It is the antiparasitic properties of garlic that comes into the picture while treating thrush. Crush a few cloves of garlic and chew well along with some water or on its own. Leave in the mouth for maximum time, though this could be a tough thing to do due to its pungency.
Doing this every day will help in treating the fungi and removing the infection. Garlic can be prepared as a tea or can be added to your favorite dish though it may not give the same and quick results as direct application of garlic on the mouth.
An extract prepared from grapefruit seed has anti bacterial and anti fungal properties that can help treat thrush. Take an ounce of water and add ten drops of the seed extract. Drink this twice daily. This is also excellent for treating as well as preventing thrush in babies. Apply the seed extract on the areole and the nipples before feeding the baby and after.
Rich in omega 3 fatty acids that are natural immune boosters, flax seeds or the oil can be very beneficial in the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections of the body. Take one teaspoon flax oil every day or chew on half a teaspoon of flax seeds to help the fungus to recede naturally.
Coconut oil is known for its anti fungal properties. But, the refined oils that we get in the shops may not suit the purpose. Virgin coconut oil has to be applied on the mouth and nipples and the mouth of the baby as well for helping the fungus to recede. Frequent application of coconut oil prevents spread of candida albicans and also discourages fungal growth, slowly taking care of the infection completely.
Aloe Vera is an excellent gel that forms a coating around the fungus and mouth and destroys the action and spread of the fungus causing thrush. Aloe Vera is also good for controlling itching and discomfort due to its cooling properties. Take aloe juice or gel from the plant and apply on the patches in the mouth. Reapply as often as needed.
Apple cider vinegar helps in restoring the pH balance in the mouth and this will prevent fungal growth in the mouth. Take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and dilute with a cup of warm water. Swish your mouth with this solution several times a day to aid in the destruction if fungus. Apple cider vinegar is also good for reducing itching and keeping the mouth fresh and clean.
Fungus cannot thrive in warm or hot environments and this peculiarity can be used for destroying the fungus in the mouth. Take warm or hot water that you can tolerate and use it for washing and swishing the mouth several times during the day.
This will soon start discouraging the fungal growth and the infection will be completely cured in a few days. This is one of the simplest ways by which candida albicans can be treated.
Baking soda is a mild disinfectant and anti bacterial agent and also helps in restoring the pH balance in the mouth. Take half a teaspoon of baking soda and make it into a paste with water.
Using a cotton bud, apply the paste inside the mouth, gums and other areas infected with thrush Leave it on for as much times as you can and repeat 4-5 times a day. Top it up with rinsing with half a teaspoon of baking soda and warm water.
