A burn is usually accompanied by inflammation and a burning sensation along with tearing off of the skin and formation of blisters or accumulation of fluids around the wound. Burns may leave permanent scars and injury as the tissues are unable to regenerate themselves, with an exception to the epidermis or the outer layer of the skin which may heal up considerably, in due course. There are some extremely effective ways of healing burns naturally, if the injury is not very severe.
The damages that occurs in case of burns take place gradually. Therefore, if we apply water or cold compress immediately, it blocks further damage to some extent. Therefore, the first thing that needs to be done is to apply water on the affected area.
It is best to expose the burnt area to cool running water or completely submerge the area in cool water. For best results, water should be applied for atleast thirty minutes. If blisters are formed, it is better not to break them.
Vinegar works well on minor burns. A few drops of vinegar mixed in cool water acts as a natural pain killer and relaxes the affected area. Among all the varieties, apple cider vinegar is the best one that works on injury from burns. However, this antidote is effective on first degree burns only, especially sunburns.
It is because of its acidic properties present that vinegar should never be applied alone and should be diluted with considerable amount of water before applying it on burn wounds.
Onions are being used since ages to treat burn injuries and scar marks left from it. The therapeutic properties present it helps in combating burns and infections arising therefrom. Onion juice or freshly sliced onion slices soothes the pain almost immediately.
If the burn is deep, applying onion for two to three months, thrice or four times daily works as an excellent home remedy. It is extensively being used by chefs and other professional kitchen staff across the globe as a first aid for kitchen burns.
Aloe vera is known for its anti-inflammatory, soothing and cooling properties. The gel present inside the aloe leaves works on burnt skin by accelerating the flow of blood into the affected area. It also reduces the chances of infections from burns by killing the bacteria and other organisms that are likely to cause such infections.
Aloe juice, if applied immediately and then regularly, reduces scars and blemishes gradually. According to Dr. Lawrence D. Rosen, a pediatrician at the Whole Child Center in Oradell, New Jersey, aloe has the medicinal properties to the help the cells regenerate and heal faster. Applying aloe juice is quite easy. Since the leaves as very thick, they can be broken easily without any effort. It is watery and juicy inside and the gel comes out easily without any squeezing.

Honey creates hydrogen peroxide which helps in healing injury from burns. Its acidic properties prohibit the growth of bacteria, which in turn, acts as an antidote for any possible infection. It should be applied directly on the affected area. Apply and spread honey gently over the burns and cover the area with a cellophane paper.
Allow this wrap to remain for two days. Now apply more honey over the previous one without washing off the one applied earlier, as washing would remove the protective shield formed with honey over the affected tissue.
Baking powder or bicarbonate of sodium is extensively used as a home remedy for the treatment of burns. It is found in almost every house and its kitchen which works wonders on burns.
The mode of its application is very simple and easy. Make a consistent paste of baking powder and water and apply it over the burn. You may keep reapplying the paste until the injury totally dissolves.
