Quite often, a sore throat accompanies a bout of cold. If you have a sore throat that feels itchy and irritating, do salt water gargles throughout the day.

Mix half a teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water and gargle with it. Swish it around your throat for a while. This helps kill the harmful microbes lurking in your throat and provides relief from the hoarseness.

Inhale Some Steam

Hot steam opens up your air passages and helps you breathe easier. You can run a hot shower in your bathroom and inhale the steam. This helps loosen up the mucous.

For more effectiveness, take a half bucket of hot water and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to it. Bend over it and cover your head with a towel. Inhale the steam deeply. This provides immediate relief as the blocked nose opens up.

Drink Ginger Tea

Ginger possesses anti-inflammatory properties and has been used since ancient times to cure a cold. It kills the viruses that are the root cause of your cold. If you have a sore throat as a result of the cold, ginger tea helps provide a lot of relief from the soreness. Finely grate or chop some ginger root and add to a cup of boiling water.

Let this stand for a while, then strain and sip on this hot liquid slowly. You can also reheat the mixture if it has gone slightly cold. Add some honey to this mixture if you prefer it sweet. Honey has additional health benefits, so go ahead and add a bit of it to your tea. Drink ginger tea at least thrice a day to get relief from the cold.

Moisturize The Dry Air

When you have cold symptoms, dryness in the air worsens the condition. Use a vaporizer or humidifier in your room. This will keep the air around you moist and help you feel more comfortable. The ideal humidity to maintain is around sixty percent. If you are using a humidifier, ensure that you maintain it well else it can get clogged with harmful bacteria. Steam vaporizers are also a good option. Since they can cause burns, do not leave them unattended if you have a small child at home.

Healthy Diet Can Do Wonders

Avoid eating oily and fatty foods, instead opt for lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. A healthy diet will help you fight the infection better and restore your health in its earlier condition. Have plenty of vitamin C rich fruits like lemons and oranges.

Vitamin C makes your immune system stronger and helps keep all infections at bay. When you are suffering from the symptoms of common cold, it helps reduce the growth of the harmful microbes in your system.

Rest

Your body is fighting the infection with all its might. The common cold has left you weak and low in strength. Try and get as much rest as possible.

Take some time off from work and do not exercise for a few days till you get well. This will allow your body to heal faster and cure the cold in a shorter time.
