Share

Fever blisters also known as cold sores are small blisters filled with fluid. They occur around the lips and the oral cavity. They often appear in groups of patches around the oral cavity and the lips. When a blister breaks open the fluid oozes out and a crust is formed that covers the sore. Fever blisters can also appear in the genital area and the leading cause is the herpes simplex virus type1.

This virus which is already existent in the nerve cells in a latent state becomes active when the immune system is weakened due to excessive stress or fatigue, menstruation, exposure to strong sunlight and diseases and illnesses. The blisters generally break out at the outer edges of the lips and cause a tingling sensation followed by intense itching and burning. When the blisters burst after a few days the fluid oozes out and forms a crust over the lesions. There may be fever and headaches and pain in the joints and muscles. The lymph nodes too become inflamed and cause great distress.
