How To Get Rid Of Indigestion

Share

Indigestion is caused mainly due to over eating or eating spicy or oily food and irritable bowel syndrome. As a result, gas and acidity are formed in the stomach which slowly spreads to other parts of the body and causes a lot of uneasiness like restlessness, headache, body ache, heartburn, cramps and bloating of the stomach, nausea and insomnia, to name a few. We are likely to suffer from indigestion when we do not eat in time, get insufficient sleep, stress, overwork, anxiety or inadequate exercise.

There are many medications available in the market that are quite effective. However, they also have some mild or serious side effects apart from the hefty amount we need to pay for purchasing them. Moreover, they are not as beneficial as home remedies in repairing and rejuvenating our digestive system. Therefore, it is always safe to  try out the home remedies before popping another pill.

Ways To Get Rid Of Indigestion

Water

We should drink plenty of water during indigestion, apart from drinking eight to ten glasses of water daily. It not only cleanses our stomach and remove toxins from the body, but also helps in passing out the gas and acids from the body by diluting them.

If the water is a little warm, it helps in expelling gas from the body faster. One important thing that needs to be kept in mind is that drinking water while eating, or immediately after that may trigger indigestion.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is very effective for combating indigestion. It works almost instantly in reducing flatulence and bloating of the stomach apart from expelling the gas formed. You may add half a tea spoon of baking soda to a glass of water.

The soda acts like antacid and breaks the food and other fatty particles in it stomach and helps in indigestion. Soda water also neutralizes the acid formation in the stomach. However, this solution should not be taken on regular basis as it is not suitable for a person having a low sodium diet.

Ginger

Ginger is not just an ingredient that enhances the taste of food, but is also gifted with loads of goodness. It helps in reducing gas, flatulence, bloating and other symptoms of indigestion and soothes the digestive track.

A piece of raw ginger chewed immediately before consuming food has the effect of preventing indigestion by enhancing the flow of enzymes. However, ginger should be taken in moderation as excess intake will increase heartburn, which is another serious outcome of indigestion.

Mint

Mint leaves are very refreshing and beneficial for the digestive track. The menthol present in it has a soothing effect on an upset stomach.

According to a study done by the University of Maryland Medical Center, mint calms the stomach muscles and accelerates the bowel movement through the stomach. The easiest way of intake is to chew a few fresh leaves alone or with food. You may also add a few drops of mint juice with water or juice.

Lifestyle

A few changes in lifestyle goes a long way in warding off indigestion. Divide your meals into small portions, keep healthy food like sprouts, oatmeal or multi-grain cookies, vegetable and fruit slices handy to deal with random cravings. Exercise regularly and cut down on junk foods and caffeine.
