Scabies is caused by the infestation of mite which produces a skin rash, composed of small bumps and blisters. The scabies mites which are eight legged parasites burrow into the skin to cause relentless and severe itching which becomes more aggravated in the night, making sleep impossible. Skin to skin contact and sexual contact are the most common forms of transmission.

The infection usually appears in the genital area, buttocks, around the waist, knees, between the fingers, wrists, around the nipples and the backs and the sides of the feet. The mites known as Sarcoptes scabiei can only be seen with a magnifying glass or a microscope. The female mites which are 0.3 mm to 0.4 mm long infest the human beings and attack the upper layers of the skin.
