Stomach flu is how gastroenteritis is vernacularly referred to as. It involves the inflammation of the stomach and the small intestine. The common symptoms are vomiting, cramps, abdominal pains and diarrhea.
It is mostly caused by a certain ‘rotavirus’. Other causes include getting close with the infected (for it is contagious), improper nutrition and consumption of unhygienic water. The following however, are the best preventive measures.
Washing hands thoroughly, especially after using toilets is compulsory. Using hand sanitizers is another must. The fingers, finger nails and the cuticles should be washed well. Tables, drawers, fridge tops and doors should be wiped clean (disinfected) regularly such that viruses and bacteria which cause the stomach flu cannot use them as breeding grounds. Bleaching surfaces with recommended amounts of bleach solution is an extension of the desired hygiene.
It is also being mentioned that vegetables and fruits should be washes well before bringing them into use.
Cooking utensils, eating utensils, towels and dresses should not shared. It goes without saying that the infected person or the person showing up symptoms should be avoided completely. Even soaps and things similar should not be shared with them.
Diet is a preventive measure common to all ailments and diseases. Ginger root, peppermint and chamomile should be included in the daily diet. They are all known for their digestive properties and nutrient values and thus can be used such that stomach flu is not caused. Green leafy vegetables and fruits (specifically ones containing water) should be taken daily and in ample amounts.
They make the immune system stronger and thus minor infections which might create a pathway for major ones (directly leading to stomach flu) can be avoided completely. Dairy liquid foods, caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks and the like should be avoided as far as possible.
Contaminated food and water are the primary reasons for getting invaded by the virus or bacteria causing the stomach flu. Therefore it is absolutely necessary to take care of hygiene and other discipline while travelling. Thus, only well sealed water bottles should qualify to get consumed; Ice cubes should be avoided (because the water from which it was made might have been unfit) and if required chilled water should be bought.
Bottled water should also be used to brush the teeth. Raw food that has been prepared with the hands should be avoided for it poses high chances of contamination. Meat and fish should be consumed provided they are roasted or fried well. Sparsely cooked food is best avoided.
An excessively tired body is more prone to getting infected than another one which has been subjected to rest and relaxation. Thus ample amount of rest is a must. Sleeping for at least eight hours a day and finding ways to curb increasing stress levels are important preventive issues. They might sound silly but experts tell they are not. Meditation and yoga might add to the effect.
These are the best possible remedies of stomach flu. They should be kept in mind for viruses and bacteria remain on hunt forever for host bodies to cause infection in!
