Swollen ankles are a common problem faced by women during pregnancy. It is not a very serious situation and can be controlled by following simple methods. Swelling during pregnancy occurs due to water retention (edema) in the body.
As the baby grows in the womb the pressure on pelvic veins is increased, it slows down the process of blood circulation and the fluid gets accumulated in feet and ankles.High blood pressure and eating a high sodium diet can also cause swelling in ankles during pregnancy. Swelling in ankles generally gets aggravated in the third trimester of pregnancy, but you can prevent it if you are cautious from the beginning.
Eat a low salt diet. Reduce the quantity of salt in your food and avoid eating salted nuts. Do not sprinkle extra salt on your salad.
Eat spinach, cabbage, wheat germs and almonds etc. These are high fibre food and will help to prevent constipation. They also contain vitamin E which improves blood circulation and reduces swelling in ankles during pregnancy.
Increase the intake of water and juice. It will keep you well hydrated and flush out the toxins from your body by way of urine. Diuretics that help to urinate more to get rid of extra fluid from the body, are not recommended during pregnancy.
You must have noticed that swelling is mostly reduced when you get up in the morning after a night’s rest. It increases as the day passes due to pressure on the legs. You should put your feet up while sitting. Place a low stool under your feet or put a pillow under your legs when you are lying. It will help to reduce water retention in ankles and remove swelling.
Avoid standing in one place for a long time. Place your feet on a 12 inches high stool to prevent fluid accumulation if you have to stand. Keep changing the foot.
Take short walks at frequent intervals during the day to stimulate blood circulation. Long walk will tire you and it will increase the swelling in the ankles.
Take a break in between performing daily chores to give rest to your feet. Do ankle rotations when you are watching TV or reading a book. It keeps the joints flexible and active, it helps to reduce swelling in pregnancy.Soak your feet in a solution of warm water and salt. It is an extremely relaxing and rejuvenating treatment for swollen ankles.
Massage your feet and ankles with upwards strokes to improve blood circulation. It not only helps to reduce swelling but also removes all the stress and strain of daily routine from your feet. Take the help of your spouse. Pamper your feet as they are carrying the extra weight of pregnancy.
If you are travelling long distance by car then it is advisable to take breaks in between and stretch your legs and put them up. Take a stroll to avoid water retention.If swelling in the ankles is not reduced by following the above mentioned tips then you should consult your doctor and follow the advised treatment.
