How To Treat A Fever

Share

A fever is part of the body’s defense against infection. When the immune system fights bacteria and viruses and other foreign invaders it brings on a fever. These foreign invaders are considered as fever producing substances known as pyrogens. These pyrogens trigger the immune system’s response and tell the hypothalamus to increase the temperature set point to enable the body to ward off the infection.

Fever is a common symptom of colds, flu, autoimmune disorders, urinary tract infections and other viral and bacterial infections. High fever can cause shivering, shaking, chills, skin flushing, intermittent sweats, headaches, joint and muscle aches, rapid heart rate, dizziness and extreme weakness. Although fever is not an illness it is a symptom of the underlying disease and can become dangerous if it exceeds forty degrees centigrade.

Best Ways To Treat A Fever

Cold Compresses

Take a basin of chilled water and add a few drops of sandalwood oil to it. Dip a clean and soft cotton cloth into the water and squeeze out the excess water. Fold the cloth several times to form a compress then place it on your forehead.

As soon as the compress begins to get warm dip it again into the water and repeat the process. Do this for ten or fifteen minutes three times a day. This is one of the most effective ways of treating a fever.

Fruit Juices

A solid diet can encourage the growth of bacteria that is causing your illness so it is best to eat as little as possible and to sustain the body’s strength with freshly squeezed fruit juices which are packed with powerful antioxidants and which not only scavenge the harmful free radicals from the body and drive them out of it but also help to cool the body and reduce the fever. Therefore it is a good idea to fast while the fever persists and to drink fresh fruit juices throughout the day.
