6 Ways To Treat A Sprained Ankle

Share

Sprained ankle is one of the most common injuries. Ankle sprain can happen anywhere to anyone at anytime. It can also be in the form of a twisted ankle, ankle injury, ankle ligament injury or floppy ankle. This happens because ligaments in the ankle region become damaged.

When there is an ankle sprain, often there is an immediate swelling, accompanied by a bruise. You experience severe pain and there is also a difficulty in movement. Although an ankle sprain can seem minor, if the sprain happens frequently, then it results in more serious problems like long term joint pain. Following are some tips how you can successfully handle a sprained ankle.

6 How To Treat A Sprained Ankle In 6 Easy Ways

Ice Pack

Placing an ice pack on the injured area for approximately 20 to 30 mins will not only ease the pain, but will also get down the swelling that has occurred due to this injury.

A thing to remember is never use ice directly on the injury area, instead wrap it in a fine towel or any fine cloth.

Bandage

Tying an elastic bandage and compressing the injury area, not only brings down the swelling but also enable you to move around without hurting or aggravating the already injured ankle.

But care has to be taken that the bandage should not be very tight, as this could cause increase in pain or numbness. In such a case just loosen the bandage a little.

Oil Massage

Massaging the injured ankle with oil especially garlic or almond oil will help reduction in inflammation caused due to the injury.

Do not apply too much of pressure while massaging, just a gentle massage will do. A combined mixture of sunflower oil and camphor oil (a tablespoon each) can also be used to massage the area of injury, in case of a sprained ankle.

Egg

The yolk of egg has some medicinal values. So take the yolk of an egg and mix it well with olive oil and apply this mixture to the affected area. Put some cotton or some soft cloth over the mixture.

Leave it for some time preferably for a couple of hours. After removing the cotton/cloth, wash the area with some warm water. Keep repeating this process for a few days.

Cabbage

Take some cabbage leaves and soak it in hot water for some time. Now removing the cabbage leaves from the hot water, place it over the ankle sprain area.

Leave it there for around 15 to 20 mins, or till the leaves cool down completely. It not only reduces the swelling but the pain as well.

Onions

Peel off the skin of the onion and after warming it, place it on the affected area. Take a fine handkerchief or any fine piece of cloth like muslin cloth. Tie the onion placed on the sprain with it. The warmness of the onions pulls out the pain and gives relief.

The above methods will help heal the sprained ankle within a period of few days, but giving rest to the foot is the best way to heal fast. Also you have to be very careful that at no cost you put direct pressure or weight on it. This would make the pain worse and the injured ankle will take longer to heal.
