How To Treat Anemia With Natural Remedies

Anaemia is a condition in which the haemoglobin level or the red blood cells are less than normal in a person. The haemoglobin level of a normal person should be less than 13.5 grams/100 ml. in men and in women it should be less than 12.0grams/100ml. It may vary slightly according to the disposition of the individual.Anaemia is caused by many factors, such as excessive bleeding during menstruation and heavy blood loss due to an injury or insufficient intake of iron in your diet. Anaemia is more common among women because of regular blood loss at the time of menstruation and the chances of a fall in haemoglobin level increases during pregnancy.

The most noticeable symptoms of anaemia are a pale skin, dark circles around the eyes, feeling of weakness and sometimes the person may suffer from giddiness. Anaemic people may also have brittle and concave nails. Constant fatigue, breathlessness at the slightest exertion, low blood pressure and lack of energy are also experienced by a person who is suffering from anaemia. Anaemia can cause further health problems if it is not taken care of. It can lead to constipation, flatulence, palpitation, nervous disorders and dyspepsia.

In initial stages you can tackle Anaemia without resorting to iron supplements. You have to make certain modifications in your diet and lifestyle. Food that is rich in iron content is abundantly available and can be easily incorporated in your daily diet. Leading a stress free life and maintaining a regular exercise routine can do the trick and can protect you from many complications.

Natural Remedies for Anaemia

Lemon

Lemon has a high content of vitamin C. It also contains vitamin B, riboflavin, calcium, phosphorous and magnesium. Vitamin C is essential for the growth of cells and for improving body’s resistance against infections. Vitamin C also helps in better absorption of iron that is obtained from food. Adding a few drops of lemon juice to your salad and iron rich food not only enhances the taste but also makes it easily digestible.

Mix the juice of one lemon with half a glass of tomato juice and drink it once a day to improve your haemoglobin level.

Amla (Indian Gooseberry)

Amla is a rich source of vitamin C and iron. It has the power to cure many ailments and it also strengthens the immune system. People who are suffering from Anaemia should eat amla everyday to increase their red blood cells (RBC) count.
To cure anaemia you should take1/2 cup amla juice and mix 2 teaspoon honey in it. Add a little water and drink it once a day.

Carrot

Carrot is a storehouse of vitamin A, E, K, B1 and B6. It also contains magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and biotin. It is especially beneficial for anaemic persons.

Drink 250 grams of carrot juice mixed with 125 grams of spinach juice everyday to improve your haemoglobin level.

Beetroot

Beetroot is an excellent food to treat anaemia. It has blood forming properties and it is a rich source of iron, sodium, potassium, iodine, copper, sulphur and it contains vitamin P, C, B1 and B2. Its juice is low in calorie and is easily digestible. Beetroot juice strengthens the resistance power and increases the red blood cell count.

People suffering from anaemia should drink beetroot juice or soup every day. You can also eat beetroot as salad. You should peel and boil it before adding it to your salads.

Spinach

Spinach is a power food. It is a rich source of vitamin A, B, C, iron and calcium. Hence, it is extremely beneficial for anaemic people. You can eat spinach in many forms like you can eat it as a vegetable and cook it with cottage cheese or cook it with pulses. Spinach can be mixed with curd to make a delicious raita. It can be mixed with wheat flour to make chapattis. The nutrients of spinach are not destroyed by cooking.

Honey

Honey is a good remedy for anaemia. It helps to increase the haemoglobin level as it contains iron as well as vitamin A, B6, B12, manganese and copper. Honey can be taken with lemon juice and water or with milk. You can use it in salad dressing or as a sweetener for your desserts.

Onion

Onion is used in cooking in almost every household. It is a rich source of iron, sulphur, copper and vitamin C. It stimulates blood formation in the body and improves haemoglobin level.

It is most beneficial when it is eaten in the raw form like salad. You can take ½ cup onion juice mixed with 1 tea spoon honey for better results.

Soya bean

Soya bean is rich in iron and protein so it is a beneficial cereal for anaemic persons. You can add soya bean flour with wheat flour to make rotis or you can cook whole soya beans with other grams or pulses. Some people may find soya beans difficult to digest, so they should eat it in small quantity.

Almonds

Almonds are rich in iron, vitamin E, zinc, proteins and magnesium. Soak seven almonds at night and in the morning peel them and grind them to make a paste; mix it with a pinch of black pepper powder and mishri and eat it daily for at least 40 days. You will notice a remarkable improvement in your haemoglobin level.

Fenugreek

Fresh fenugreek or fenugreek seeds are rich in iron and calcium content along with various minerals. You should add them to your daily diet to improve blood formation. Fenugreek is especially beneficial for young anaemic girls at the onset of puberty.

There are certain things which should be avoided by anaemic people-

Smoking is harmful for everyone and it is more harmful for people with low haemoglobin level. Anaemic persons should reduce the intake of tea and coffee as they interfere with the process of iron absorption in the body. Alcohol also hinders iron absorption in the blood and may reduce the red blood cell count. It also destroys the essential nutrients in the food and may even cause anaemia apart from other health problems.
