Bipolar is a mental illness which is characterized by extreme mood swings. Within the space of a few minutes the patient can experience mood swings from extreme high to extreme low and also fluctuations in energy and activity levels as result of which the patient is unable to complete the tasks in hand. This debilitating disease can destroy relationships, career and job prospects and affect academic performance. Sometimes, in extreme cases the patient develops suicidal tendencies.

This disease affects both men and women and usually starts between the ages of 15 to 25 years. From a period of euphoria in which the person goes on emotional and mental sprees and becomes extremely reckless in a sudden burst of energy the patient goes into a state of depression in which case the patient feels sad, dejected, enervated and has a feeling of hopelessness. The main causes of this disease are genetics, brain chemical imbalance, hormonal imbalance and biological traits.

Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds contain alpha-linolenic acid which is a type of omega 3 fatty acid and which greatly helps people suffering from bipolar disorder. Flaxseeds can help to restore the hormonal imbalances in the body and can stabilize the moods.

They also keep the energy levels up in the body and greatly enhance the immune system. Grind some flaxseeds and store them in a jar. Mix two tablespoons of the flaxseed meal with a cup of curd and eat it every morning.

Brahmi

Brahmi has been used in ayurvedic medicine since time unknown for improving the functionalities of the brain. It increases memory and concentration powers and energizes the brain thus eliminating depression. Boil a few fresh brahmi leaves in two glasses of water.

Continue boiling on a low heat for three minutes then turn off the gas. Strain the tea and drink cupfuls of it three times daily. In addition to this, massage your scalp with brahmi oil every night for ten minutes before going to bed.

Fish Oil

Fish oil is the richest source of omega 3 fatty acids which are very beneficial for treating bipolar disorder. Fish oil not only improves the function of the brain and the nerves but it also helps to overcome depression and promotes stability in the moods.

Take two capsules of fish oil twice daily. You can also eat fish like tuna, mackerel and salmon and include them in your daily diet.

Ginseng

Ginseng is a superb tonic for the brain. It has great energizing effects on the body too and helps remove fatigue and lethargy. It not only helps the neurotransmitters to relay the impulses properly but it also keeps the brain cells in good health and well functioning. Drink three cups of ginseng tea daily.

Holy Basil Or Tulsi

Holy basil has amazing medicinal values which heal the body both physically as well as mentally. It can promote calm and peace and constancy in the moods by strengthening the function of the brain.

Crush a few tulsi leaves and extract its juice. Take one tablespoon of the juice and add one teaspoon of honey to it. Mix well and drink this tonic every morning.
