How To Treat Bladder Infection

Share

The bladder is part of the urinary system and it stores urine from where it is excreted out of the body. The kidneys filter the blood and the waste is left in the form of urine which leaves the kidneys and enters the bladder through two tubes known as ureters-one tube for each kidney. When the bladder becomes full it contracts to empty its contents and the urine passes out of it through the urethra. In females, the length of the urethra is very short and it is very close to the vagina as a result of which the bacteria can gain an easy access to the bladder.

In males, the length of the urethra traverses the length of the penis therefore it is not so easy for the bacteria to gain an entry. The bacteria travel from the rectum or the vagina up the urethra and enter the bladder. Normally the urine is sterile but the presence of bacteria in it can cause bladder infection. The main symptoms are pain and burning during urination, frequent and urgent need to urinate, fever, chills, nausea, pain in the pelvic area, foul smelling urine and lower abdominal tenderness.
