The first thing to remember when you are affected by conjunctivitis is to keep the eyes clean and protect it from any dirt or other irritants. Wash your hands regularly and do not rub your eyes.
You must also remove contact lens if you use them, as these do not help in healing. Do not apply makeup till the eyes are completely healed. You must also clean the discharge from your eyes regularly using a clean tissue or handkerchief. Keeping your eyes protected helps in faster healing and does not aggravate the situation.
A fast home remedy is putting a few drops of whey or liquid part of yogurt or curd made at home. It works immediately on the pathogen affecting the eye. The objective is to take the bacteria rich whey or watery curd extracts and adds it to the eye.
The bacteria of the whey push out the pathogenic bacteria afflicting the eye members. Take the whey from the curd and use this as an eye drop. You should use this eye drop twice a day by applying two drops in the affected eye.

Cold compress is very useful in treating conjunctivitis. Using ice packs as cold compress is an easy and effective remedy. You can also boil fennel seeds boiled in water, cool this and then use it as a cold compress.
Similarly, freshly dried coriander seeds boiled in water and cooled down can be used as cold compress. Another remedy would be to take one table spoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water and use this to wash your eyes.
Breast milk, which is loaded with immunity boosting content, has known to be a fast acting deterrent to the perpetuation of all infection causing pathogens. A few drops in the eye can do the magic of reducing the infection.
Raw goat milk or cow’s milk has also been acclaimed as a probiotics charged booster of immunity. Just putting some drops of the milk at regular intervals in the eyes can help in reduction of the virulent symptoms.
Raw potato slices cause a soothing, cooling impact on the reddened eyes. Take a slice of the potato and apply it directly on the affected eye, pressing it gently. This can be done three times a day. Each compress can last for upto 10 minutes. Remember not to apply force while pressing the eye with the potato.
Rose water has also been recommended as a coolant for compresses and washes to heal the virulent red eye. This brings about a pathogen-free environment within the eye and brings down the virulent infection. You can apply two drops of rose water in the affected eye twice daily.
