How To Treat Hot Flashes

Many women experience hot flashes when undergoing menopause. They usually begin when a woman turns forty years old and her menstruation periods become irregular. Some women stop experiencing hot flashes after a few years but for some women they can last for longer than ten years. A feeling of warmth or intense heat suddenly engulfs the entire body and is more intensely felt in the neck and head regions. This wave of heat makes causes great distress and discomfort while it lasts.

Hot flashes can last from a few seconds to a few minutes and sometimes continue for a long while. They are thought to be caused by hormonal and biochemical changes and declining estrogen levels in the body. Sometimes hot flashes are accompanied by night sweats which lead to inadequate sleep and extreme tiredness. Hormone therapy is the standard prescribed treatment for hot flashes but it is very harmful and can cause heart attack, heart stroke and breast cancer. Hot flashes are best treated with natural substances that are safe as well as effective.

Deep Breathing Exercises

Hot flashes can cause great irritability and mood swings. It is important to relax the mind and the body and to stay calm and composed at all times. Sit on a mat in a cross legged position with your back straight. Place your hands on your knees with palms facing upwards.

Press your right nostril with your right thumb and inhale deeply through the left nostril. Then press your left nostril with your right hand ring finger and exhale through the right nostril. Then keeping your left nostril pressed, inhale through your right nostril. Repeat this for fifteen minutes. Do this exercise, every morning and evening on a regular basis.

Coconut Water

It is important to stay cool because even a slight rise in the body’s core temperature can trigger hot flashes. Avoid hot and spicy foods and stop drinking alcohol altogether.

Also avoid drinking too much strong coffee. Alcohol and caffeine can also trigger hot flashes. Coconut water not only provides vital nourishment to the body but also helps it to stay cool and refreshed. Drink tender coconut water three times daily.

Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds are rich in key nutrients and contain large amounts of omega 3 fatty acids which help to maintain the hormonal balance in the body.

Flaxseeds not only reduce the frequency of hot flashes but they also reduce their intensity and time of duration. Eat two tablespoons of flaxseed meal with a cup of yogurt every day.

Olive Oil

Olive oil has innumerable health benefits. It contains huge amounts of antioxidants like vitamin E and has estrogenic effects. You can substitute olive oil in all your cooking and you can even substitute it for butter.

Instead of eating buttered toast, you can dip your toast in some olive oil which has been seasoned with some salt and pepper. You can also eat five to six pickled olives everyday.

Exercise

Light exercises are the best way to get rid of hot flashes. Exercise not only stimulates blood circulation but it also detoxifies the body and restores the hormonal balance. You can do aerobics for half an hour every morning on a regular basis.
