Migraine is a severe headache which occurs due to complex interactions between the nervous system and the vascular system and an alteration in the brain chemicals. The blood vessels become enlarged and certain neurological pathways become sensitized and stimulated. The nerves surrounding the blood vessels release certain chemicals which promote inflammation.
During a migraine attack the sympathetic nervous system in the body is stirred into activity. This part of the nervous system controls primitive responses to stress and pain that is why the increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system in the intestine causes diarrhea, nausea and vomiting during a migraine attack. This unnatural activity also decreases the blood circulation and leads to cold hands and feet and a pale skin. There is also increased sensitivity to light and sound and the vision too becomes blurred at times. Migraine headaches are intense and cause a throbbing or pounding pain that involves only one temple. Sometimes the pain can also occur in the forehead and around the eye.
