How To Treat Nail Fungus

Share

Nail fungus infections are common in both men and women. The elderly and the aged people are more prone to them. The fingernails as well as the toenails can get affected though the toenails are more susceptible to fungal infections. Tiny microscopic fungi which do not need sunlight for survival cause nail infections. The most common type of fungus is Candida. Sometimes certain molds and yeast can also infect the nails.

The microbes enter the skin through small cuts in the skin. If there is a separation between the nail and the nail bed then the microbes can enter through this too. Some of the main causes for nail fungus are excessive perspiration, humid and moist work environment, damp socks and shoes which allow no circulation of air, slow growing nails, genetics and nail injuries. People who have diabetes or have weak immune systems are more liable to contract nail fungus. The infected nails become discolored and thick. As the infection advances, the nails become distorted, crumbly and brittle. There can also be pain and a foul odor.
