5 Ways To Treat Sciatica

Share

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve which is the largest nerve in the body and which starts from the nerve roots of the spinal cord in the lower back and runs through the buttock area way down to the lower limb and ends in its nerve endings, becomes irritated and inflamed. The pain begins in the lower back and extends behind the thigh to reach the knee and go still further below to the foot. The main cause of sciatica is lumbar disc herniation which compresses the nerve and pinches it into irritation.

Sometimes, the adjacent bones and muscles can also exert a pressure on the sciatic nerve and inflame it. Other causes can be tumors, infections, injuries, internal bleeding and pregnancy. The pain caused by this condition is very acute and debilitating. One is unable to sit or stand without feeling shooting pain in the back, thigh and the limb. The pain can be either on one side or both the sides of the body.

5 Ways To Treat Sciatica

Exercise

To treat sciatica, it is best to remain active and carry on with your daily chores. Exercise for half an hour in the early morning sunlight will provide you with a double benefit.

Exercise and early morning sunlight both improve the blood circulation and dilate the blood vessels to enable them to carry more nutrients and oxygen to all the cells in the body. They also stimulate the production of endorphins which have natural painkilling abilities.

Fenugreek

Soak one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in some water overnight. In the morning consume the seeds along with water. Regular use will soon relieve you of the pain and inflammation and enable you to go about your work effortlessly.

Ginger

Over the counter painkillers and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can lead to digestive problems, ulcers and internal bleeding. It is best to treat sciatica with natural anti-inflammatory agents like ginger. Boil a cup of water and add one grated teaspoon of ginger to it. Cover the cup and strain the tea after ten minutes. Drink three to four cups of this tea to relieve pain.

Mustard Oil

Mustard oil has been used since centuries for relieving pain and for strengthening the bones, muscles and tendons. Warm some mustard oil and have some one massage your back, thighs and legs with it for fifteen minutes.

The magnesium found in mustard oil will quickly travel through the blood stream to the irritated sciatic nerve and ease its irritation and reduce the inflammation thus helping to alleviate the pain.

Compression Packs

Hot or cold compression packs can considerably reduce the pain. For cold compression fill an ice bag with some ice cubes and place it directly over the painful area for ten minutes. Keep moving the ice bag from your back to your thighs and to your legs.

For hot compression fill a basin with hot water and dip a clean soft towel into it. Squeeze out the excess water and wrap the towel around your thighs and legs. Use the hot or cold packs twice daily.
