Swelling in the gums is a common problem and is generally caused by improper brushing habits and poor oral hygiene. The gums become red and painful. There is tenderness and inflammation and sometimes they start bleeding when touched by a toothbrush or when eating crisp and hard foodstuffs like apples, pears, crackers and toast. Sometimes the gums swell due to sensitivity to toothpaste and mouthwash, poor fitting dentures, pregnancy and improper nutrition.
Viral and fungal infections can also set in and cause swollen and bleeding gums. The mouth is full of bacteria and fungi but these are normally harmless. It is only when these start feeding on food debris stuck between the teeth or elsewhere inside the mouth that they start overgrowing and cause infections leading to gingivitis and periodontal disease. Plaque too contains harmful bacteria so it is important to keep removing it daily by proper brushing.
