Gastritis is the inflammation or irritation of the stomach lining and is associated with pain and discomfort of the upper abdomen. This may arise suddenly or gradually and sudden occurrence of gastritis is an acute problem while the gradual development of gastritis is a chronic case.
Gastritis that develops due to the consumption of certain medications like aspirin or consumption of alcohol is called as acute gastritis. Chronic gastritis is mostly caused by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. The ideal treatment for gastritis is to follow a proper diet. Proper nutrients play a key role in relieving the symptoms of gastritis.
3 Diet For Gastritis
The first and foremost thing in a gastric diet is that the patient should fast. If it is acute gastritis, two to three days of fast may be enough, but if it’s a chronic gastritis, fast should be continued for a week or even more. Fasting effectively stops the intake of irritants and thus allows the stomach to rest and settle the toxic condition. Throughout the fasting period the patient is either given warm water or fruit juices, which makes the elimination of toxins faster.
All Fruit Diet
Once the acute symptoms of gastritis subside, patient should adopt an all fruit diet for three days continuously. During this period, patient can take juicy fruits such as grapes, apple, oranges, pears, pineapple, melons, peaches etc. The fruit meals can be taken at five hour intervals.
Well-Balanced Diet
Once the symptoms are alleviated, patient can follow a well-balanced diet for the rest of the life. A well-balanced diet should include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Peaches are found to be highly beneficial for treating gastritis, hence include peaches in every day diet. A combination of carrot and spinach juice is also considered to be very effective for treating gastritis. Ten ounces of carrot juice can be combined with six ounces of spinach juice and can be taken daily to get fast relief from gastritis.Gastritis patients can use cottage cheese and yoghurt freely, but too much variety of foods shouldn’t be included in the same meal.
Take meals at two hours interval and the last meal of the day should be taken at least two hours prior to going to bed. The patient should take at least eight or ten glasses of water per day, but too much water should not be drunk along with the meal, as it thins out the digestive juices and checks the digestion. Moreover food should not be taken in haste rather a meal should be taken in a relaxed and pleasing atmosphere.
Foods To Avoid
Gastritis patients should not take chilies, alcohol, meat, hot pepper, black pepper, coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, sweets, pastry, cakes etc. as these substances irritates the stomach lining and increase the discomforts associated with gastritis. Similarly limit the consumption of tomato juice, tomatoes, fatty foods, peppermint, citrus juices, as these substances enhance the pain in the esophagus and heartburn.
Also avoid smoking and intake of medications such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Gastritis patients should get sufficient rest and avoid stress, as stress and strenuous physical and mental work increases the risk of gastritis. Stress can be reduced by practicing meditation, yoga and regular exercises like walking and swimming.
