When the flow out of the eye is blocked or stopped, intraocular pressure starts building in the eye.
This damages the optic nerve and causes visual field loss. It creeps upon you silently and gradually over a long time, without any manifestations. If not treated timely, it can cause vision impairment and eventually vision loss. It is a good practice to have your eyes checked once in two years. Alcohol and tobacco should be strictly avoided as they aggravate and increase the problem.
Vitamin A protects the cornea of the eye. It reduces the risk of eye infections and protects the eye tissue. The vitamin A, found in colorful fruits and vegetables like carrots, spinach, pumpkin, apricots and broccoli, is present in the form of carotenoids. Carotenoids are antioxidant in nature.
They protect the cells from being damaged by free radicals and unstable atoms that can break down healthy tissue in the eyes. Carrots should be eaten raw to obtain optimum nutrition. Eat one cup of pure pumpkin puree daily, for maximum carotenoids. Spinach should be eaten in salads or soup.
Bilberries are commonly associated with eye health. Though they are similar to blueberries, their properties are vastly different. Bilberries are antioxidants and anti-inflammatory.
They can restore rhodospin. Rhodospin is a pigment found in the membrane of the retina that enables vision in dim light. They protect against glaucoma by reducing pressure and preserving the health and integrity of the blood vessels in the eyes.
Bioflavonoids play a vital role in our health, chiefly because of their anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties. The bioflavonoid rutin, present in oranges, lemons, grapes, peaches and cherries is crucial for the eyes because it protects and maintains the health of the blood vessels and promotes circulation.
The peel of apples is very rich in rutin, so, apples should be eaten with the skin. The rind of oranges and lemons also rich in rutin, can be eaten in the candied form.
Ginkgo biloba has been used to treat various diseases for thousands of years. It helps to improve memory, is good in asthma and increases mental alertness. It is most beneficial for the circulatory system. It conveys oxygen and nutrition to the eyes.
The flavonoids in ginkgo boost the blood supply to the capillaries in the retina and protect the eye. They also preserve and increase sharpness of vision. Eat daily two teaspoons of roasted ginkgo seeds. Steep one teaspoon of dried ginkgo leaves in one cup of boiling water. After five minutes strain and drink. Drink two cups daily.
Fennel is very good for the eyes. It soothes the eyes and clears vision. Take a clean vessel, pour a glass of water into it. Add a teaspoon of fennel seeds and boil for three minutes. Cool and strain. Wash your eyes with this water as often as required.
