Migraine is severe and excruciating pain in the head which is often accompanied by nausea, a tingling sensation in the arms and legs, blind spots, cold hands and feet and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine headaches are caused by the inflammation of the blood vessels and the temporal artery that are situated outside the skull and under the skin of the temple.
When the temporal artery gets enlarged, certain chemicals are produced which surround and engulf the blood vessels causing severe pain, nausea and further inflammation of the artery. These headaches can last from a few hours to several days.
Often migraine headaches are triggered by intense emotional stress, hormone imbalance, menstrual cycle fluctuation, allergies, allergic reactions to certain foods and fasting. The main symptoms are throbbing and pulsing pain which is usually restricted to one side of the head, vomiting and inability to perform any task during the bout.
When you feel the headache coming on, put some ice cubes in a bowl of chilled water and dip a thin cotton towel into it. Soak the towel until it is thoroughly chilled. Wring out the excess water and place it around the head and eyes. When the towel loses its chillness, dip again and repeat the process for twenty minutes. The chilled moisture will prevent the blood vessels from swelling too much and will alleviate the severity of the pain.
