Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is located in the upper part of the abdomen behind the stomach. This gland produces digestive juices and digestive hormones which play an important role in digestion. The digestive juices contain enzymes and bicarbonate and travel to the small intestine through a small duct. The enzymes break down the proteins and fat in the food that we eat and help in the absorption of nutrients.
The bicarbonate helps to neutralize the stomach acid. The digestive hormones consist of glucagon and insulin which infiltrate the bloodstream and control the body’s blood sugar level. These hormones are the chief source of energy and play a vital role in the cause of diabetes.
Infection, high fat level in the blood, certain medicines and surgery, gallstones and alcoholism are some of the causes of pancreatitis. The predominant symptom is pain followed by fever, nausea, fatigue, swollen abdomen and low blood pressure. When the gland gets inflamed the surrounding blood vessels too swell and the digestive juices which get trapped in the gland start digesting the pancreas itself.
Baking soda is required to rebuild the lost bicarbonate and restore it to its normal levels in the body. Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink two or three times daily. You will notice the improvement In about two week’s time. To the baking soda you can also add a quarter teaspoon of sea salt to enhance the salinity and strengthen the immune system. It also keeps the pancreas well hydrated.
Aloe vera has wide ranging healing powers and is considerably used in treating pancreatitis. It has anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties which soothe the inflamed pancreas and rids it of harmful toxins. It ensures a healthy immune system and eliminates lethargy and fatigue. Drink half a cup of aloe vera juice daily to protect the pancreas and maintain the balance of the digestive juices.
Beets are full of essential nutrients that boost the body’s energy levels and promote a feeling of well being and relaxation. Beets have concentrated amounts of the nutrient betaine which nourishes the pancreas and maintains its health. It also detoxifies the pancreas and helps it to function normally. Drink one glass of fresh beetroot juice daily.
Spinach has great antioxidant properties which eliminate the free radicals and prevent pancreatitis. It also reduces the swelling and the pain. Spinach is rich in iron and vitamin B which help to repair the pancreas and enhance its function. Eat tender spinach leaves in salads with every meal.
Soy is rich in proteins and abounds in essential amino acids, omega 3 fatty acids and isoflavones. It stabilizes the sugar levels in the blood by releasing sugar slowly and gradually. When you are suffering from pancreatitis you should avoid red meat at all costs. Tofu made out of soy is an excellent substitute for meat and provides valuable proteins which control the fat level in the blood. Other soy products that you can include in your diet are soy milk and curd, soya oil and soya flour.
