Uric acid is produced by our body during the metabolism of purine which is a muscle protein that is derived from the food that we eat or from the breakdown of body cells. Uric acid is insoluble and needs a special enzyme to break it down. Our bodies do not produce this enzyme so, a major portion of uric acid is excreted by the kidneys in the urine and the rest is excreted by the intestines.
If the renal function is improper, a larger percentage is excreted by the intestines. When the concentrations of this acid exceed normal levels it crystallizes under the skin, in the joints and in the urinary tract. The main causes for high levels of uric acid are renal insufficiency, excessive intake of muscle protein, heredity and gout. The crystals can form stones in the kidneys and bladder causing excessive burning pain and swelling. The skin can become red and extremely tender and the joints become stiff and painful.
