7 Natural Cures For Hypoglycemia

Share

Hypoglycemia is a medical condition which means “low-blood sugar.” Blood sugar or glucose is required to fuel the body cells for optimum functioning of the body. When blood sugar levels drop below the required parameters, hypoglycemia occurs.  A person diagnosed with hypoglycemia experiences a range of symptoms like dilated pupils, fainting, fatigue, headaches, heart fluttering and palpitations, lack of co-ordination, nervousness, numbness, pale complexion, trembling, etc.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia can manifest from mild and moderate to severe.  Several causes are attributed to hypoglycemia; chief among them are alcoholism, diabetes, diseases of the kidney, liver or pancreas, prolonged use of medication to treat acute diabetes, stress & acute anxiety, and a weak metabolism arising out of thyroid disorders.  There are many drugs like Prandin, most commonly prescribed drugs by a doctor or physician to treat hypoglycemia, but it is important to note that there are several alternative ways of managing this condition.

7 Best Natural Cures For Hypoglycemia

Modify Your Dieting Program

While a physician’s advice and medication may be necessary to tackle this condition, hypoglycemia can also be controlled by some diet and lifestyle changes. Consumption of refined, processed, salty and fried foods should be completely avoided at best or consumed prudently.

Concentrated sugary fruit juices and aerated drinks, which give rise to alarming sugar levels, and alcohol, are a strict no-no, and emphasis should be on the intake of complex carbohydrates such as whole grain, lentils and pulses that are rich in protein and fiber.  Green and leafy vegetables supply other vitamins and minerals essential to provide energy for efficient functioning of the body.

Perform A Regular Exercise

Along with modifications in diet, lifestyle changes like regular exercise and a positive attitude can combat hypoglycemia.  A simple and effective form of exercise is walking; just 30 minutes of daily walk can work wonders for the metabolism in tackling hypoglycemia.

Consume Bilberry Fruit

With research proving that prolonged intake of prescription drugs to treat illnesses can cause harmful and long-lasting side effects, it has become imperative to look at alternative medication and cures to treat medical conditions. Reports indicate that hypoglycemia can also be effectively controlled by either consuming bilberry fruits directly or capsules made from the Bilberry fruit.

In natural form, the wrinkled blackberry is found widely in Central and Northern Europe. Bilberry is dried and packaged in capsule form for medicinal use and can be consumed as per directions. People who are on blood thinners for cardiovascular treatment should consult a physician before taking this medication.  Bilberry cannot be prescribed to or consumed by women who are breastfeeding.

Stevia

Stevia, which is obtained from a perennially growing plant in South America, is another healthy alternative sugar form to satiate sweet cravings and is far superior in comparison to artificial sweeteners that contain Aspartame. Available in both powder and liquid forms, Stevia should be avoided by those who are taking prescribed drugs to treat diabetes and high-blood Pressure. Those susceptible to allergies, especially of ragweed, and pregnant and breastfeeding women should stay away from this.

Prefer Smaller And More Frequent Meals

Recent health and fitness studies show that smaller and more frequent meals are a good option in the treatment of diabetes and blood sugar conditions.

Breaking down two or three large meals into five or six smaller meals throughout the day, or in two to three hour frequencies not only provides the required amount of energy but also controls the release of sugar or glucose into the blood stream and keeps it to manageable levels. Fresh vegetables and fruits, high-fiber snacks and whole grains are ideal choices of slow-release glucose foods that keep you full and hunger-free for longer periods, thus avoiding snacking on junk foods.

Say NO To Simple Carbohydrates

Since hypoglycemia can be triggered by sudden spikes and drops in blood sugar levels, it is advisable to refrain from consuming simple carbohydrates like refined white sugar and foods.

Some of the canned and packaged products, especially fruit juices and concentrates, available off-the-shelf in grocery stores and supermarkets contain high levels of sugar syrup and fructose.  Such foods are to be strictly avoided. Consumption of alcohol should be kept to the minimum; a snack consumed with the drink prevents hypoglycemia from occurring.

Consume Vitamins And Minerals

Regular consumption of vitamins and minerals are also essential to combat hypoglycemia and maintain normal levels of blood sugar.  B-Vitamins are known to metabolize carbohydrates and are therefore very useful in the treatment of hypoglycemia. Niacin is a B-Vitamin, which help in controlling and stabilizing the blood glucose levels.

Chromium, which can be purchased from a pharmacy or health food outlet, is also another mineral which when consumed in recommended dosages, control hypoglycemia.  Physicians and medical experts also recommend a daily intake of 200 milligrams of magnesium along with vitamins to treat hypoglycemia. Magnesium is proven to be an important nutrient in balancing and maintaining body metabolism and energy levels, especially blood sugar or glucose.
