Brush your hair twice a day with a natural bristle hair brush. This stimulates the scalp and the hair’s natural oils are distributed uniformly on the hair. Brushing also makes the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum which combines with the sweat on the scalp to create the skin’s natural protective layer called the acid mantle.
First of all wash your hair whenever it feels dirty and also if it gets wet in the rain. Washing the hair removes excess sweat, oil and dirt from the hair. Always use a shower head filter which removes minerals and larger deposits from water to prevent the minerals from harming the hair. The bad effect of well water and hard water can be minimised by using demineralising shampoos and conditioners.
Do not use hot water as it harms the hair, always use lukewarm water to wash your hair. For a better wash use a good shampoo which suits your hair type the best. Do not forget to wet your hair before applying the shampoo. Shampoos create an emulsifying effect which converts the grease and dirt in the hair into an emulsion which can be easily washed with water.
Sulphate free shampoos are preferable as sulphate strips the hair of its natural oil. Soap less or acidic shampoos are closer to the natural pH of hair so, they don’t swell the hair shaft and the natural oils of the hair are retained. Use a good conditioner after shampooing to protect the hair. Dry your hair with a towel gently instead of blow drying.
A strong breeze, harsh sun, wind and rain, especially acid rain can cause a lot of damage to the hair. Always cover your hair with a scarf or a hat which travelling, if there is a chance of your hair being exposed to extreme conditions.
While swimming in chlorinated or sea water first wet the hair and then apply protective creams. The oxidizing effects of chlorine can be minimised by using products with high concentration of antioxidants.
Unnecessary use of chemical products and treatments are best avoided. Bleaching, colouring, straightening, curling etc. subject the hair to unwanted chemicals. In case you do such treatments see to it that you follow it up with the maintenance required. Hair which has undergone chemical treatment is devoid of moisture and more prone to damage.
Natural hair beauty promoters like amla(Indian Goose berry), coconut oil, egg, coconut milk, olive oil , hibiscus, soap nuts etc, come without any major side effects. Try and use them whenever possible.
Lack of a nutritious diet shows signs on hair too. So have a nutritious diet full of proteins , vitamins and minerals. Proteins make the hair strong and Zinc found in meat and sea food prevents hair loss.
Copper found in shell fish, nuts, fresh vegetables etc. helps in maintaining the hair pigmentation. Have sufficient water as it helps to keep the hair shiny. Avoid having a lot of junk food as it causes hair loss.
