Simple Home Remedies For Gastroenteritis

Share

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation in the abdominal cavities and digestive tract which leads to vomiting, stomach ache and conditions like diarrhea. It occurs because of bacterial and viral infections transmitted through contaminated food and water in the digestive tract.

Often the reasons of its occurrence are also associated with parasites and even drugs and chemicals. This contagious disease gives hard times to the patient as frequent vomiting and stomach ache makes one very weak. The condition has many cures to it available at home itself. Let us see some such cures:

Various Ways To Cure Gastroenteritis

Bed Rest And Oral Rehydration

The patient must be given bed rest and made sure that he doesn’t do any physical activity until the vomiting and nausea stops. Rest will relax abdominal muscles and intestines and prevent them from exacerbation due to physical activity. Dehydration can be dealt with oral rehydration supplies.

Oral rehydration salt can be bought from closest chemist shop and the electrolyte formulation can be given with boiled water. A homemade solution can also be made for this purpose, with juice of two lemons in one glass of water with five to six tablespoons of sugar and a bit of salt.

Ice Or Cold Packs

You can take ice and rub it gently on abdominal region, neck, spine and chest. This will help in stopping frequent vomiting which may help charge up the patient with energy.

Make sure that you don’t bring the skin in direct contact with ice, cover it with a napkin or any small cloth. You may also use cold packs for this purpose but they should be changes every 24 hours.

Diet

In this condition, the patient is most sensitive to what he eats. Give him only light food and its better if you completely rely on fresh fruits, whole grain cereals and light cooked vegetables.

Pickles, fried and oily foods, strong coffee, tea and white flour products are extremely harmful if taken in this condition. As the diarrhea starts to subside, you must gradually shift your diet to BRAT which is bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. They aid in recovering from diarrhea.

Yogurt

It possesses live cultures which are friendly bacteria. They help in curing diarrhea as they make a protection layer in the stomach and intestines and help flush out bacterial toxins from the body with the help of lactic acid.

Although some health experts recommend not taking dairy products in this condition, taking yogurt twice a day is good. However, take care not to consume sour yogurt, as anything sour will worsen the condition.

Orange Peel Tree

Before going to make a cup of tea from orange, do not forget to wash it properly. Take off the peel and chop it into small pieces. Put these chopped peel into a cup of water and leave it to steep for 10 minutes.

Add little amount of sugar or honey for sweetening and then have it. Having this tea twice or thrice a day can show fast effects in recovery as orange’s peel extracts are claimed to be associated with curing the symptoms of gastroenteritis.
