‘Puffy eyes’ is a condition wherein the eyes are swollen due to a number of factors. The area around our eyes is thin and the blood vessels beneath the skin make it quite sensitive. In most of the cases, it is only a fleeting problem and can be treated with the help of simple home remedies.
However, if the puffiness is persistent and severe or it is accompanied by discomfort, pain or blurry vision then you need to contact an optometrist. The home remedies that are used to treat puffy eyes will relieve some of the uneasiness associated with this condition.
Besides being deliciously cool, cucumbers are also known for its astringent properties, which will help the blood vessels around the eyes to contract. Lean back and place thinly sliced pieces of cucumber on each eye. Relax for 5-10 minutes. You can try this remedy at night just before going to bed.
This nourishing remedy provides nutrients and hydration required by the skin and will cure puffiness. The vitamin C and the natural water packed in cucumbers are absorbed by the skin, which is quite beneficial.
The white of an egg has astringent property and works towards tightening the pores and also reduces puffy eyes. Apply egg white (1/2 tsp) under the eyes gently with your fingers. Let it dry for fifteen minutes and then wash well with lukewarm water. This remedy will not only reduce puffiness, but also enhances the overall look of the skin beneath the eyes.
Strawberries are an effective remedy to get rid of the puffiness in a few minutes. Also, the presence of a substance known as alpha-hydroxy in strawberries can help in reviving your skin. With regular usage, the skin looks young and smooth.
The swelling and puffiness is also reduced. Refrigerate the strawberries for about ½ an hour. Remove the top part and slice the cold strawberries into thick pieces. Place the slices of strawberry under your eyes for a couple of minutes. You will see positive improvement, once they are removed.
Vitamin E and the antioxidants present in this versatile plant are effective in getting rid of puffiness. The extract of Aloe Vera is applied on the affected skin under the eyes. It reduces swelling by flushing out the fluid around the eyes and by improving the blood circulation.
However, you must ensure that the extract does not get into your eyes. Besides the pure extract, you can also use skin care products that contain Aloe Vera extract.
Pepperoni pizza, jumbo fries and several other salt-intense foods usually cause puffy eyes. Nevertheless, you can get rid of this problem by mixing salt (1/2 tsp) in warm water (1 quart). Dip facial pads or cotton balls in this solution and apply these pads on the eyelids. Relax for about 10 minutes in this position and ensure that the pads are in place all the while.
Black or Green tea, both are quite good to soothe irritated and puffy eyes. The herbal teas like chamomile contain anti-irritants, which soothe inflammation and redness, while caffeinated teas constrict the blood vessels thereby reducing swelling.
Steep two tea bags in boiling water for about 3 to 5 minutes and allow the bags to cool until they are mildly tepid to the touch. Place one tea bag on each eye and cover it using a soft cloth. In summer, you can refrigerate the tea bags and use it on your eyes for a refreshing experience.
