Children in particular are highly prone to cuts and scrapes. Often the gashes are very deep, leaving wounds that take time to heal. Injuries can occur due to accidents, sports or general carelessness.
Conventional medicine treats deep wounds and cuts with regular dressing and prescription antibiotics to arrest the beginnings of an infection. But did you know that simple remedies followed at home can help to speed up the healing process? Here are some popular home remedies for healing cuts.
For very small cuts and pricks which happen suddenly, it is a good idea to suck on the wound. Using your saliva stops the bleeding and also protects the cut as saliva has a number of antiseptic properties. Later on you can dress and bandage the wound.
The wound or cut needs to be cleaned and dressed every day. This can be done at home by using some warm water and a mild antiseptic solution like dettol. Put a capful of dettol in a mug of warm water. Use sterile cotton to gently clean the cut. This gets rid of grime and dirt which could otherwise lead to an infection.
In ancient times when medicines were not available, people used to use turmeric to heal and dress cuts. Turmeric is a spice that we use in our daily cooking. It is chocker block full of antiseptic properties that promote healing. Make a thick paste of turmeric and water and gently apply it to the wound but only after it has started to heal. The turmeric does wonders for speeding up the healing process. You will notice that in 2-3 days, your wound has completely healed.
For very deep cuts, it is of utmost importance to stop the bleeding. This can be done by applying gentle pressure on the cut with the help of sterile gauze or a strip of cloth. The pressure applied stops the bleeding and prevents excessive blood loss. Only once the bleeding has stopped, can you start to dress the wound. If the bleeding does not stop, see a doctor immediately.
Take some tea bags and chill them in the refrigerator. Now apply these cold tea bags on the healing cut. Tea has tannin which helps the cut to heal and protects it from infection. If you have the wherewithal, use green tea which has been found to be exceptionally beneficial.
Raw honey applied to the healing cut is an effective home remedy. Make sure you use pure honey for this purpose. Raw, unadulterated honey is full of antiseptic properties that lead to quick healing.
Break open a vitamin E capsule and pour the contents on the healing cut. The powdered vitamin E allows the skin to heal and repair itself.
In order to heal the cut, keep it covered at all times to protect it from an infection especially if the cut is very deep or is taking time to heal. Once the scab has been formed, you can uncover the wound.
