Gout is one of the most painful forms of arthritis, which is characterized by swollen and inflamed joints. This condition, which most often affects the base of the first toe (popularly known as big toe), can affect other parts such as heels, knees, fingers and wrists. High levels of uric acid in the blood (the condition being called hyperuricemia)is the culprit of gout.
Diet has been found to contribute to 12% to the incidence of gout. Alcohol, fructose beverages, seafood and meat are the dietary causal agents of gout. Hence, consumption of these foods should be avoided. Purine-rich and proteinaceous foods should be avoided though recent studies show their infectivity in causing gout. Dairy products, vitamin C and coffee are found to reduce the risk of the occurrence of gout, as they are found to decrease insulin resistance.
Whole grain breads are recommended as main course items on the diet menu of a person suffering from gout. This is because they contain complex carbohydrates which help in complete metabolism of fats, which would otherwise produce ketones which would increase the level of uric acid in the blood.
Fruits such as cherries, vitamin C-rich fruits, and berries contain nutrients that effectively prevent or treat gout. The antioxidants and flavonoids present in cherries help in relieving the inflammation caused due to gout.
Fruits rich in vitamin C such as barbedos, oranges, black currants, and papaya have anti-inflammatory properties, and therefore help prevent gout symptoms. Berries are recommended for all kinds of arthritis for their anti-inflammatory properties.
Vegetables that are rich in magnesium should be consumed, as magnesium aids in better circulation of blood in the body. It enables this by regularizing heart beat and lowering blood pressure.
Better blood circulation prevents formation of uric acid deposits in the joints, thereby preventing gout and other types of arthritis. Raw spinach and Swiss chard are vegetables that are rich in magnesium.

Low-fat yogurt and other dairy products have been observed to lower the levels of uric acid in the blood, as they contain lactose and calcium which are associated with lower urate levels.
They are also seen to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties, which help in relieving gout symptoms. Low-fat yogurt, milk and other dairy products are seen to prevent the occurrence of gout.
Eggs are low-purine protein food. Purines are organic molecules found in certain proteins. They are important for the synthesis of certain biomolecules and the genetic components (DNA and RNA).They get converted to uric acid on being metabolized in their normal activities.
As gout patients should be on uric acid restriction, they should limit their intake of purines. Hence, foods such as eggs, nuts, peanut butter, which are low in purine, can be consumed.
A gout patient should consume adequate quantity of water to flush out uric acid from the body through the excretory system. Water and other fluids such as coffee reduce the risk of gout. One should drink a minimum of 8-16 glasses of water a day.
