Finger nails manicured to perfection can add a lot of appeal to a woman’s hands. However, at times due to a poor diet and lack of personal grooming the nails start to chip and peel.
This is also a sign of brittle and fragile nails which are prone to breakage. Most of the time peeling fingernails occur due to a nutrient deficiency and exposure to harsh detergents and chemicals which make them dry and brittle. This is, however, not a very serious condition and can be easily rectified with the help of some simple home remedies.
Home Remedies For Peeling Fingernails
Nail oil
Specially formulated nail oils can be used to tackle the problem. Apply oil which contains vitamin E and jojoba. The jojoba in the oil allows the vitamin E to be absorbed better into the skin. Gently massage the nail, allowing the oil to seep into the nail bed and the cuticle area.
A Healthy Diet
Make sure your diet is healthy. Lack of nutrients in the diet can affect the health of your hair, nails and skin. Eat a lot of protein as well as fruits and vegetables which supply generous amounts of vitamins and minerals.
You will have to make a healthy diet a part of your lifestyle in order to see results. Over the course of a few weeks, your nails will automatically become stronger and stop peeling.
Olive Oil
Once a day, soak the nails in olive oil. This smoothes the texture of the nail surface and makes the nails hardier and stronger. Use it once every day and twice a week after the nails begin to heal.
Cuticle Cream
Buy any good nail cuticle cream and apply some of this cream on your nails before retiring for the night. The cuticle cream prevents peeling nails and also softens the cuticles, thus making it easier for them to be removed and giving your nails a pristine appearance.
Wear Gloves
If you have to do household chores, make sure you always wear gloves to protect your hands and nails. Over time the harsh detergents in the dish washing solution can wreak havoc on your hands and nails.
Nail Polish
A clear coat of transparent nail polish also helps to protect the nail from superficial peels. However this should not be used as the only remedy. If your nails hurt or are badly chipped, avoid using nail polish.
Take a Multi Vitamin
Speak to your doctor about putting you on a course of multi-vitamins. The multi-vitamins will help to strengthen the nail bed and protect the nail from chipping and peeling.
Drink enough water
Make sure you drink enough water during the day. Like the skin, excessively damaged nails benefit intensely from water.
Fish Oil
Take a capsule of fish oil which has omega-3 fatty acids in it. These fatty acids help the nails to heal and become stronger in the process. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats which are said to be extremely beneficial for the hair, skin and nails.
